The Next Step: Serving on a Nonprofit Board in Your 20's

cmaco.org
As college students, we have the world in our hands. If we push ourselves and take advantage of opportunities that come our way, we can excel greatly in our field of study.

Many students take internships, and some take more than one. Other students volunteer for organizations or get involved in professional student activities.

However, there is another type of professional development experience that college students may not know they are qualified for. That experience is serving on the executive board for a nonprofit organization.

At first, this idea seems strange and even impossible. As twenty-somethings, how would our generation be able to provide direction for a non-profit?

However, our young and creative minds are exactly what most organizations are looking for, and with new ideas (and knowledge that we learn from our studies), we can have a profound impact on an organization.

The experience itself will be a great resume booster, however, you will also get to network with many professionals and learn how the inside of a non-profit works.

You will also learn skills (such as finance or corporate law) that you wouldn’t have otherwise become exposed to.

If you are interested in joining a board, it is important to find a cause that you care about. Whether it is animal welfare, sustainability, or poverty resolution, be sure that you have a personal reason for taking on a position. If you join a board that you are not passionate about, you will not have a worthwhile experience.

Once you are on a board, be sure to seek out mentors who have served for a longer period of time. This way, they can catch you up on important items you need to understand. They can also provide guidance with future decisions you will have to opportunity to influence.

It may be a daunting responsibility, but serving on a non-profit board can give you a great boost on your resume. Also,  the connections you will make may help you down the line, and you may learn skills you won’t in a classroom setting.

Say Hello to PRowl's New Leaders

Over the weekend, PRowl Public Relations held a leadership retreat for all of our newly selected leaders. The incoming Firm Director, current Firm Director, and current Executive Board led a presentation on PRowl's policies and future.

Leadership retreat is important for the transition and understanding of one's new role in the firm. Additionally, the retreat is an excellent way for our firm to receive feedback from those who are members, and efficiently execute the ideas they have for the growth of the firm.

PRoblems: Our Top Five PR Don'ts

PRowl’s executive board came together and thought of a few things to steer clear of if you want to maintain a professional public relations appearance. Here are the top five problems that you want to avoid:

Overly complicated language. You would think that as a PR student you would want to show off your vocabulary whenever possible, but the opposite is true. When creating content be sure to stay away from technical terms or PR jargon. Always keep your writing clear and concise.

Lack of attention to detail. As a PR professional, it is essential to pay attention to the "little things." Whether that be posting the right content to social media, drafting the perfect lead in your press release, or selecting the perfect font for an event invitation, those little details add up, quickly!

Missing deadlines. People joke about how similar PR and journalism are, but in this case it could not be more true. Deadlines are so crucial in PR. Missing them not only affects you, but it also affects your publications, clients, or even fellow staff members.

Offending a client. Never bad mouth a client, it’s that simple. Even if you are not in the room with them, you are constantly representing them. Always make sure that what you are saying about your client is what you would want the public to say.

Being a know-it-all. This is something to avoid in every profession, but it definitely holds true for PR. PR is still a growing industry and new social networks are developed everyday. In such a rapidly changing field it’s impossible to know everything that is going on, and that’s okay. Part of the beauty of PR is the networks that we make and being able to reach out to them when needed.

These five issues may seem like obvious potholes to avoid, but everyone makes mistakes. If you stay mindful of these “PRoblems,” you can cultivate and maintain your credibility and professionalism in the PR world.
